I've been following the rice package instructions for the amount of water instead of using the lines inside the cooker which are a bit hard to read without very good light. I even tried cooking only 1 scoop of rice, even thought they claim a minimum of 2, and it came out perfect. We purchased this one to replace an older 10 cup rice cooker and this one is SMALLER. If you look in the cooker itself it actually measures 6 CUPS. True 12 cup rice cookers are twice as large. I don't know how Aroma is calling this a 12 cup rice cooker...perhaps if you include the steamed veggies that you can cook along with your rice??? I have never been a big rice lover but thought I might try this, especially with the steamer. My husband and I love it and have been trying all kinds of different rices found at our local Whole Foods Market (who knew there were so many). The steamer is great and cooks food in no time. Especially loved salmon. The rice comes out great every time and the directions are easy to follow. This is the best $25 dollars I've spent in a long time. Love the size too....
