Sanyo ECJ-HC100S 10-Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker and Slow Cooker

This review is from: Sanyo ECJ-HC100S 10-Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker and Slow CookerI come from south India, which means that I grew up eating rice every day. This also means that for me, rice is not just an important food, but a way of life. At any given time, you can expect to find five different kinds of rice in my pantry at all times (10 kg long grain white rice, 10 kg white sushi rice, 5 kg Basmati, 1 kg brown sushi, 5 kg long grain brown). I still eat rice every day, although the noodles, pasta, and bread are easy to find. When I was young, my mother would by the typical rice cookers, where it would have a flimsy aluminium pot, a cheap electric part, and a cheap glass lid that didn't actually keep the moisture in. Measuring the water was a game of roulette, because although the rice always got cooked, variations in the moisture levels inside the cooking pot were bound to get wonky rather quickly. Furthermore, they never lasted too terribly long if you weren't extremely careful with them. When I moved out on my own, I continued the tradition of getting the standard, cheap rice cookers. I was unwilling to spend this sort of money on a rice cooker. Until my third one fried out on me.This model keeps rice piping hot, and tender, and fluffy, for three days. It cooks up the following rices perfectly (as in, I've tested it myself): Jasmine, White Basmati, Parboiled Basmati, Haiga-Mai, White Koshihikari, Brown Koshihikari, long grain Brown, and long grain White. When using the slow cooker pot, I can churn out a pot of lentil soup quickly or slowly, depending on how much time I have on my hands. The tofu cycle works for the Indian dish known as idli. You end up with rather a large idli, but it's easy enough to cut up into four pieces. It makes steel cut oats in one hour flat, but makes sure that they're tender but not mushy. The minimum capacity is 2 cups, and the maximum is 10. It comes with a steaming basket to steam vegetables, however, I doubt that I'll be using it any time soon for steaming vegetables. What that basket is good for is a no-fuss Chinese dim sum steaming, without having to turn on the stove. Just set your buns down on the little steaming tray, and set your rice cooker to do the work for you. No poking around and watching the water levels for you! The instructions are easy to follow: measure the dry rice with the provided cup, and then fill water to the line indicated on the inside of the pot, depending on the type of rice (or porridge, as needed). Also, get used to measuring the rice out exactly, because that will get you more consistent pots of rice, especially when you're working with unknown rices. There is no guesswork. You will be cooking with less water, because the steam is contained inside the chamber, and not flying out into the air. In the last few minutes of cooking, you will notice a bit of steam being vented from the top, but that's minimal in comparison to how much steam is produced from a conventional rice cooker. The rice pot is EXTREMELY nonstick. For easy cleanup, wait for the rice and the starch and the rest to dry out. Then wipe down the inside with your hand, and watch everything fall away like magic. Then, go ahead and wash as normal. The plastic chassis is easy to clean with a soft cloth and a bit of water. Give it a wipe down after every use, and it'll look sparkling clean and beautiful there on your counter top. Go buy this now if you're considering it. You won't regret it.UPDATE: It's now January of 2011, and I bought this in September 2008. The rice cooker is still a work horse, and we've been using it if not every single day, pretty close to every single day. Pot after pot of perfect rice. Nonstick surface is still going strong....This review is from: Sanyo ECJ-HC100S 10-Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker and Slow CookerNot normally one to write reviews, this is one time I felt compelled to put my two cents in. I thoroughly researched slow cookers and rice makers before deciding on the Sanyo ECJ-HC100S. I must say that this cooker is the smartest thing I've purchased in a very long time -- a great concept, nicely designed and very well made. It is incredibly easy to use and the heavy duty, non-stick bowls (not one, but two!) and lids are easy to clean. It's sleek and good-looking as well as nice and compact, considering its large capacity -- not bulky or cumbersome like most of the crockpot-type slow cookers out there. And what's better than having two products in one?!The first thing I used it for was brown basmati rice, which I have never been able to successfully cook on the stovetop. I couldn't have been happier with the result; it was cooked to perfection as was every other type of rice that I've made since then. Just use the cup provided to measure out the rice and then add water to the appropriate line shown inside the bowl and you can't go wrong. Even porridge and steelcut oats come out perfect every time. For me, the drawback to crockery cooking has always been the need to brown meat in a seperate pan on the stovetop. However, the Sanyo slow cooking bowl is metal with a non-stick interior and has both a high and low setting for slow cooking. Therefore, you can start out using the high setting to brown the meat and then add the rest of your ingredients and switch to low for the rest of the cooking process. A beautiful thing! So far this item is worth every penny I paid for it. I found the best price online at Bed, Bath & Beyond. Sweeter yet, because I placed my order in person at my local BB&B store, they even accepted my store coupon for 20% off! Hats off to Sanyo for a great product all around!...This review is from: Sanyo ECJ-HC100S 10-Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker and Slow CookerI filled the slow cooker pot with water, let it run and then measured the temperature of the water. For slow cooking high, the temp was 205. For slow cooking low, the temp was 185. The warm mode temp was 140....

This review is from: Oster 4721 10-Cup Rice Cooker, Stainless SteelThough it works fine, it is not the best product and I do not recommend it. It will make your rice alright, but the mess it leaves behind can bring you to tears! It spews out starchy rice water from the top on to whatever surface you have it on, it has so many nooks and little places for the water to collect that you too will be tempted to throw it right into the trash bin. To make a long story short, it is impossible to get clean once you use it, you can not remove the lead to sanitize it properly and the lead has a tendency to slam on your hand while you are handling it, etc. Very poor design and whoever made it such be fired as an appliance designer....This review is from: Oster 4721 10-Cup Rice Cooker, Stainless SteelOster Stainless Steel Rice CookerPurshased at Target store for listed price. Worked for about a week. Satisfactory as a rice cooker and also a steamer for Chinese dim sum. Switch failed after a week. Instructions included with item(not Target instructions) were to send to a contract service provider in NJ/NY. Chose the NJ location. Cost to ship UPS about $10.00.Called service contractor several times and visited the Target store before receiving item. Tried to recover shipping cost from Target and learned that Target had no official service dept for small appliances, but could have returned the item for refund w/n 3 months of purchase.Target personnel were helpful and accepted the returned item for refund as well as offering 3 $3.00 coupons for shipping. All in all, this was a learning experience in shopping at Target as well as the unsatisfactory service from Oster. Will purchase from Target again but will avoid Oster products unless covered by an in-store service agreement....

Sanyo ECJ-N55W 5-1/2-Cup Electric Rice Cooker with Porridge/Soup Cooker and Steamer

This review is from: Sanyo ECJ-N55W 5-1/2-Cup Electric Rice Cooker with Porridge/Soup Cooker and SteamerI bought this because it was recommended by Cook's Illustrated and I've had excellent results from most of their recommendations. Not so with this one. I have major issues with the unit's cleanability. The lid is hinged and is not removable for easy cleaning. The inside of the lid had a scale on it after cooking and I was hesitant to clean it thoroughly because it seemed to be something of a mystery substance and I was afraid that I would scratch it. There is a trough that catches condensation and is also difficult to clean. Likewise with the extremely flimsy gasket. The unit took longer to clean properly than it did to make the rice, and I prefer the old Aroma rice cooker that I bought this to replace....This review is from: Sanyo ECJ-N55W 5-1/2-Cup Electric Rice Cooker with Porridge/Soup Cooker and SteamerThis product is too dificult to clean in comparison to the cheap but effective simpler rice cookers. Since the lid is attached and there are many nooks and crannies to clean including a rubber gasket, cleanup is a pain...This review is from: Sanyo ECJ-N55W 5-1/2-Cup Electric Rice Cooker with Porridge/Soup Cooker and SteamerI'm Asian and this is a WONDERFUL LITTLE COOKER! Perfect size for a couple or occasional rice makers! Excellent value for the price!Clean up is SUPER EASY IF YOU DON'T WAIT TOO LONG. If you use this machine properly, as per instruction manual and/or rice cooking directions, a once over with a wet sponge to the outer shell and under the lid will take 2 minutes. Soak non-stick rice pot as soon as possible.I specifically purchased it to make JOOK... a traditional Cantonese "comfort food". It whipped it up SUPER quick: just under an hour. In response to previous review: RECIPE PROPORTION- 1 CUP jasmine rice to 5 CUPS water with 1 teaspoon of salt, some ground or fresh ginger and a splash of sesame oil. You can add more water LATER if you like it thinner but BE WARNED... more than 5 cups of water when you first start will cause boil-over and that's a clean up misery! The typical consistency should be like oatmeal. The trick is to STIR occasionally because the water WILL separate once the mixture gets closer to being done. Every 15 minutes should suffice. I think that's why a previous review yielded a soggy rice bottom and liquid on top.In response to review about Teflon flaking: DON'T USE METAL - EVER! The unit comes with a plastic ladle. Don't use Brillo or harsh scrub sponges to clean it - EVER!In response to review about "OFF" switch: There is NONE. The cooker is designed to cook the rice/soup until its "Done"... and it mysteriously DOES! Then it goes into "Warmer" mode. The user manual instructs you to UNPLUG it when not in use. A bizarre design flaw but appliances should be unplugged when not in use anyway. The only strange part about this cooker is the "Steamer" accessory. The lid is hinged it doesn't close with EITHER the Steamer or Soup lid attachment. If your kitchen isn't properly ventilated you may experience a considerable amount of heat and humidity using this option.I'm extremely happy with my purchase. I got more as gifts....

This review is from: TIGER JAG-S18UR JAGS18U RICE COOKER 10CUP FUZZYI have had mine for almost 2 years, and I feel it's the best rice cooker I ever purchased. There are settings for white rice, brown rice, sweet rice, porridge and quick white rice if you're in a hurry. For the white and brown rice, you can also set a timer for when you want the rice finished. The Tiger has worked well for everything from short grained Calrose (white and brown) to long grained Basmati (white and brown). Also sweet rice (on it's own setting), red and wild rice, nude barley, rye and other whole grains (use the brown rice setting) have all turned out well. For wild rice, fill the water to about 1/16" or 1.5 MM over the line....This review is from: TIGER JAG-S18UR JAGS18U RICE COOKER 10CUP FUZZYWe received this rice cooker as a gift and I absolutelly love it. I prefer brown rice and it cooks perfectly with no splattering, all over the counter, like my old rice cooker. It has options to start your rice automatically and to keep it warm, which I haven't used yet, but I will.It has a large enough capacity to cook for a crowd but the rice cooks just as light and tender when I only make 2 cups. And clean-up is a breeze. Just a quick wipe with soapy water and it's clean. I have had no sticking at all.I never realized a rice cooker could be so wonderful !...This review is from: TIGER JAG-S18UR JAGS18U RICE COOKER 10CUP FUZZYThis product is very good in terms of cooking the rice. However, it takes about an hour to just cook plain white rice. I don't think it's worth the money....

Panasonic SR-TEG18 10-Cup Rice Cooker/Warmer/Steamer with Domed Lid

This review is from: Panasonic SR-TEG18 10-Cup Rice Cooker/Warmer/Steamer with Domed LidI was kind of skeptical in ordering this rice cooker because I have had a National Brand Rice Cooker for over 20+ years and it finally gave out. When I researched that Panasonic had bought out National, I thought that I would give it a try and I'm glad that I did. It cooks the rice perfectly and I like that it keeps the rice warm for up to 12 hours. It is very easy to use and cleaning is a breeze. This is the best purchase that I have made all year. I would highly recommend....This review is from: Panasonic SR-TEG18 10-Cup Rice Cooker/Warmer/Steamer with Domed LidThe capacity of this rice cooker is wonderful. It cooked and kept warm my white rice good enough, certainly not perfectly but I think if I were to keep this machine and fine-tune the water to rice ratio I would probably have more success in making sure the white rice was not too dry or mushy. However, I will definitely not be keeping it because it is horrible to cook brown rice in. The brown rice is actually cooked okay (even though there are no cooking instructions specifically for brown rice), but the huge mess involved in the cooking process is so not worth it. It's clear to me now this machine is intended to cook white rice only. When cooking brown rice it sputters terribly from its 'smart' vent making a huge mess and leaked all over the counter (and onto the floor) as the 'dew catcher' cannot keep up with what's produced when cooking brown rice. After reading the reviews I had high hopes, but will sadly be returning this rice cooker asap....This review is from: Panasonic SR-TEG18 10-Cup Rice Cooker/Warmer/Steamer with Domed LidI had a national brand rice cooker that sustained a life threatening fall. So I had to replace it (I believe a rice cooker is truly the best invention since sliced bread). Also the rice cookers with separate glass tops, do nothing for me. So I searched Amazon and found this model. I ordered it. Shipping was fast enough for me. This model works as well as the National brand model that I had, so I am quite happy with it. So if yo are looking for a simple rice cooker (turn on and forget it) this is the one you want....

Panasonic SR-3NA Rice Cooker

This review is from: Panasonic SR-3NA Rice CookerAlthough I've only owned this cooker for a lil over a month, I feel qualified to speak to it's usefulness. A bit pricey for the capacity, it's effectiveness can't be overstated. For family of 3 or less this cooker makes plenty of rice. I especially like that it can make one serving of rice fairly quickly. No fancy electronics, just a plain timed cooker. Mix the rice and water (or stock), flip the switch and when it turns off you have perfect rice. I found domestic packaged rice like Uncle Ben's to need proportions of 1:1 water to rice. Imported sticky rice from India or Asia needs a lil less water, like .8:1. You'll find the proportions you need. I hope this cooker lasts longer than at least one reviewer claimed. Once outside the warranty period, if the timer fails (I'm sure it uses a simple bi-metal timer), I just wire in a cheap electronic timer from Radio Shack....This review is from: Panasonic SR-3NA Rice Cookeri am a flight attendant. most of the time there is no meal service. also, we are runing from plane to plane no time to stop and get a hot meal. also, it's get expensive. room service is over-priced, and it's the same old stuff at every hotel. with this little work horse i can bring food from home and heat it up so i can have a hot meal. i have used it to heat up more than rice. i use it for soup, chili, oatmeal, even left over pasta with sauce. this may sound expensive, but will pay for itself if you use it as often as i do....This review is from: Panasonic SR-3NA Rice CookerAfter almost a year of perfect operation, with the rice cooker being used about twice a week, suddenly it wouldn't switch itself off. Nor could the on/off switch be operated manually. The rice just kept cooking and cooking. After about 55 minutes we pulled the plug out of the wall and tipped out what was by now a solid block of rice. It was lightly burned underneath and a bit on the sides. It seems to me that if we had been relying totally on the auto shut-off feature then there must have been a very real risk of fire. This is not only a big concern but also a big disappointment. The compact size and excellent non-stick finish had been just perfect for us....

Aroma ARC-787D-1NG 7-Cup Digital Rice Cooker & Food Steamer

This review is from: Aroma ARC-787D-1NG 7-Cup Digital Rice Cooker & Food SteamerBecause my basic 1 button - 2 setting (cook/warm) rice cooker stopped working several months ago, I decided that (for health reasons & if I could afford to) I would like to upgrade the replacement with a model that would SPECIFICALLY cook brown as well as white rice. After having numerous servings of unappetizing brown rice at various times & sources in my life, I felt it was the cooker (person OR machine) that was to blame. After doing some research pertaining to different types of rice and how they should be prepared, I've learned that to cook brown rice correctly it should begin with SEVERAL MINUTES ON LOW HEAT then brought to a boil to finish cooking before reducing to keep warm prior to serving. If you bring brown rice to a boil right away, it doesn't soften the outside of the grain and ends up seemingly undercooked. And if you just add more water at the beginning without the appropriate low heat step, it will result in the rice being mushy & overcooked. After the cooking phase, turn the pot off or 'fluff'/gently stir the rice as it begins the 'keep warm' stage (This will keep the starch - which has settled on the bottom - from burning). When the directions are followed CORRECTLY, this appliance does it properly & deliciously. I have used it many times over the past 6 months or so (brown, white, jasmine rice - I'm planning to try making Rice-a-roni using the sauté setting) and have only had 1 bad experience because I mismeasured. In my opinion, the only shortcomings are: 1. The inner bowl won't keep from spinning while scooping the contents (as it could have been designed NOT to do) 2. The signal that the cooking is finished could be louder & longer. However, with the optional use steam basket this is the BEST VALUE for a rice cooker without a delay timer & for its moderate size. If it proves to be durable (and there is no indication otherwise) this is very highly recommended....This review is from: Aroma ARC-787D-1NG 7-Cup Digital Rice Cooker & Food SteamerI own a larger Aroma Rice Cooker that has the "steam" trey and lid that closes the unit completely while cooking. The larger unit cooks OK, but because of its size, I don't use it much. It also is harder to clean, since the lid assembly is part of the unit, and is difficult to clean. This rice cooker is great for cooking just a few cups (1-3) of rice. It does it fast and as well as the larger units. It cleans up easily, since the lid is not part of the rice cooker assembly, and is a "normal" lid like other pots & pans.I have read some of the other reviews Re: it takes such a long time to cook large portions. There are dozens of different rice cookers make by Aroma. If you plan on cooking larger portions of rice often, this is not the unit for you. For daily servings of 1-3 cups, it is quick, easy-to-use, does a great job, easy to clean up, and is much smaller taking less counter and storage space....This review is from: Aroma ARC-787D-1NG 7-Cup Digital Rice Cooker & Food SteamerBought this cooker at Target for what I thought was a reasonable price--$29.99. However, I was a little concerned when I opened the box and found that the steam tray was made of cheap, thin aluminum. However, I gave the cooker a try, and the first time out, it made terrific fluffy rice and steamed vegetables perfectly. For clean-up, I put the components--including the steam tray--in the dishwasher, as the instructions were very clear this was an acceptable thing to do. Imagine my shock when I pulled the steam tray out of the dishwasher and found that the aluminum had completely discolored. When I wiped the steam tray with a towel, a thick grey residue (either from a powder coating or a chemical reaction between the aluminum and heat) came right off on the towel. Needless to say, I wasn't too keen on continuing to cook food in the steamer and returned the unit for a refund. I won't be buying Aroma products in the future....
